Portugal North Coast -Montemor-Velho Castle

You can walk around a large section of the ramparts that remain in Montemor-Velho castle. The keep, an essential part of any medieval castle, was strategically located near the entrance for defensive purposes. Its access was from the first floor not the ground to make it more secure. Roman ashlars are found at the base of this tower.
